Rosália De Souza
Garota Moderna
Leeds Music/Avatar

By MICHAEL COWAN

Published June 5, 2006

The sultry-yet-cool marriage of bossa nova and electronica gains yet another adherent with Garota Moderna, the debut from Rome-based Brazilian singer Rosália de Souza. The Rio native has become a fixture on the international jazz festival circuit, playing at Montreux as well as venues in London and Morocco. While some listeners may feel like they’ve been down this path before—especially in light of the phenomenal success of Bebel Gilberto—others never tire of the heady mix of modern beats with Brazilian swing. De Souza offers original compositions along with new spins on MPB standards. Instead of turning to the well-worn territory of the usual Tom Jobim hits, De Souza shows her serious side by choosing lesser-known but equally compelling songs, such as Caetano Veloso’s “Saudosismo,” Baden Powell and Vinicius de Morães’ “Canto de Ossanha” and Geraldo Vandré’s classic protest song “Fica Mal com Deus.”
