Kinky
Kinky
Sonic 360/Netwerk America

By Sari Heifetz

Published April 26, 2006

Kinky signals the coming of the Latin-alternative movement as they lay down high-voltage tracks straight from Monterrey, Mexico. It is all part of the Y Tu Mama Tambien phenomenon, as Mexico is producing some exceptionally eclectic representations of its culture, socio-political prospects, and musical vibes. The five-piece band shows us how combining cumbia and norteño with funky guitar and electronica creates a multi-layered global groove that is powerful, adventurous and makes you feel like bouncing through the Sonoran desert. Lyrics are profound and filled with metaphorical images, allusions to love and illusions of truth (from the Spanish: “Searching for a place to keep the present, a present I hold in my right hand which my partner calls love, love, love or passion, confusion or fear or a glass of wine?” ). Latin electronica is pretty much where it’s at, and Kinky is heading up the show. This release is explosively potent and intense with an original flavor that tastes like chilis, tequila and sunshine nectar. “Soun Tha Mi Primer Amor” and “San Antonio” are just two of the album’s many anthems for a high energy lifestyle.
