Flora Purim
Flora’s Song
Narada Jazz

By Ernest Barteldes

Published September 22, 2005

On her new album veteran Brazilian singer Flora Purim takes on several musical styles, ranging from the very Americanized blues “Less Than Lovers”(featuring pianist George Duke) to the very Brazilian “Anjo de Mim.” On her personal musical journey, she welcomes Caribbean Jazz Project’s Andy Narell, who contributed with his steel pans on “Forbidden Love,” which he wrote, and on the bossa nova-era standard “É Preciso Perdoar.” Purim’s original composition (co-written by Toninho Horta), “Anjo do Amor,” has the baritone vocals and guitar of maestro Dori Caymmi, who takes the song to his familiar shores of Bahia. Pay close attention to “Las Olas,” a Purim composition written with late bassist Jaco Pastorius and Diana Booker, “This Is Me,” an English-language song whose cheerful percussive sounds and guitar arrangement carries the flavors of northeastern Brazil, and the mostly instrumental title song, which features a berimbau alongside Flora’s scat and amazing piano and bass showcases.
