Belanova
Dulce Beat Live
Universal

By Phil Freeman

Published June 11, 2007

Belanova are an electro-disco trio from Mexico—two dorks and a cute girl they apparently talked into hanging around with them by letting her sing. Following up two megahit albums in their homeland (2003’s Cocktail and 2005’s Dulce Beat), this live CD/DVD companion piece is a damn entertaining and somewhat astonishing indication of just how popular they are, and with whom. The young-girl-heavy crowd screams and singalongs on this album frequently head almost into dog-whistle range. Vocalist Denisse Guerrero sounds like Natalia Lafourcade’s taller, giddier sister, especially on the band’s cover of, of all songs, the Cure’s “Boys Don’t Cry.” She sounds like a seven-year-old, skipping around her bedroom singing along to her favorite record from America. Guest appearances by Coti, Brian Amadeus and Café Tacuba’s Joselo Rangel (who actually sticks around for three songs) are pleasant but unnecessary; the band’s Latin-meets-Kylie-Minogue disco-pop is plenty entertaining all on its own.
