Allá
Es Tiempo
Crammed Discs

By Stacy Meyn

Published August 21, 2008

Hailing from Chi-town, Allá boasts a MySpace header that reads “Latin/psychedelic/pop,” and the sounds that bounce forth are peppy and goofy, with a spunky violin that skitters in and out of smooth vocal harmonies. It’s all very Mexico City circa 1968, with Brazilian Tropicália-meets-Phil Spector (think Os Mutantes and Gal Costa) blasting out of transistor radios everywhere. According to the trio, the title Es Tiempo means “it’s time” for a revolution in psychedelic pop—one that also includes a Krautrock and Motown revival. Add this to the fact that Allá emerged from the instrumental synthesizer group Defender, and it all makes for some nifty effervescent twists in sound. They don’t do it entirely on their own, however, boasting no fewer than 16 guest performers on an album that took four years to record in studios all over the world, with topics in Spanish that cover growing up Mexican-American, the up-and-down urban experience, and various other scenarios. Speaking of which, stay tuned for the Es Tiempo, the movie—es verdad.
