Zucchero
Zucchero & Co.
By Ernest Barteldes

Published September 22, 2005

In this Starbucks release, the Italian pop icon compiles some of his best duets and collaborations, offering them sometimes remixed or re-recorded. For instance, he added B.B. King’s live vocal from the 1999 “Pavarotti & Friends” concert to his original 1985  studio recording of the iconic “Hey Man,” and digitally united Luciano Pavarotti and Andrea Bocelli, who both contributed vocals to different versions of  “Miserere,” which is considered one of “Zucch’s” greatest international hits. The album’s other highlights include a soulful collaboration with Solomon Burke in “Diavolo In Me(A Devil In Me),” and a beautiful duet with Sheryl Crow in “Blue,” a song co-written with U2’s Bono (who wrote several English adaptations to Zucchero’s music). Also worth hearing is the rocky “Baila Morena,” which features members of the Mexican band Maná, “I Lay Down,” which features a duet recorded with John Lee Hooker two months before the blues legend’s passing, and the jazzy take on “Dune Mosse,” remixed from his historic1988 contribution with Miles Davis.
