When one thinks of countries that are conspicuously multicultural, Denmark is not the first that comes to mind. Even if it was, the fact that the country has a relatively small population reduces its chances of producing a large and diverse output of major world music talent. Reaching Out thus comes as a pleasant surprise. The 16 artists represented aren’t all stupendously talented, but none are merely mediocre, either. Just as important, some of them are bound to be interesting new discoveries to world music fans from outside Denmark. The first track, Out of Phase’s “Desire,” is possibly the most well-known, the group having achieved some success in the realm of ethnic lounge. The 10-member Latin Dance Band’s “Swing & Sway” is a salsa track sung in Danish, Spanish and English. Other distinctive tracks are by Chin (reggae), Afenginn (an eclectic Nordic/Balkan group), and Gudrun Holck (a Nordic/African blend). Reaching Out is a good title for a compilation that attempts to draw attention to artists who operate at what might be considered the margins of the world music scene.
