Electronic dance music and klezmer? Together in one disc? Don’t let your Bubbe know, but that’s exactly what the Amsterdam Klezmer Band does. By mixing upbeat, Klezmer sounds with techno and Balkan sounds, they create a unique musical mix on Remixed. These are grooves more appropriate for a nightclub than a concert hall. As a band that has always specialized in Eastern European Jewish music, Remixed is a bit of a leap. Six tracks are remixes taken from the band’s back catalogue of nine albums, while the other seven are new and original, making their first appearances on this album. Some of Europe’s best-known DJs put themselves to work at remixing these tracks, including Shantel (Bucovina Club), DJ Yuri Gurzhy (Russendisko), and Stefan Schmid (Zuco 103). Remixed is definitely not an album for Klezmer purists, but demonstrates instead how old-style music can be presented in a new and compelling way.
