Territorial Airwaves: The Finest In Hawaiian Music
Cord International

By Jill Ettinger

June 1979 saw the official Honolulu studio launch of a long-running weekly radio broadcast named Territorial Airwaves (territorial refers to pre-statehood Hawaii). Earning recognition over the years as a landmark program integral to the history of the islands' distinct musical heritage, the live remote broadcasts-turned studio sessions became an award-winning show thanks to Harry Soria Sr. and "Hawaiian music's Dick Clark," Harry B. Soria Jr. Whittling the "finest in Hawaiian music" down to just over an hour of listening is quite a feat, and this compilation takes a beautiful step in the right direction, complete with liner notes that illuminate timelines, photographs and plenty of useful information on Soria Sr.' "Voice of Hawaii." Lena Machado's "Kauoha Mai," Genoa Keawe's "Mama E," Gabby Pahinui's "Jilawe," George "Tautu" Archer and his Pagans bebop "Waikiki Chickadee" are just a few of the priceless gems this disc offers. Nothing less than the best ever can represent the Hawaiian spirit of aloha: music is certainly no exception.
