New Zealand is far enough away from most anywhere else on the planet that it has become something of a mythical island in the eyes of the rest of us. Coming from this land of foggy rolling hills and awe-inspiring surf is the incredible, often unbelievable sound of groove ensemble Fat Freddy’s Drop and their stunning new record, Based On A True Story. The band’s lush and creamy reggae-jam-funk-infused sound is richly unique, and Joe Dukie’s vocals are as hypnotic as a snake charmer. With no track under five minutes and most over seven, each song is a journey building to climaxes from which they make liquid, smooth descents. From the startling keys on “Ernie,” the record weaves itself into gorgeous track after gorgeous track, each one an epic masterpiece. This is easily one of the best albums of 2006, if not all time, leading one to question where the roots of reggae truly originated.
