Suicides, they say, are common in the spring, presumably because external awakenings are unbearable to those who feel dead inside. This record is dangerous in the way the spring is dangerous: its exuberance overwhelms the listener and demands, “You must change your life—or end it” (and, in either case, drink a lot of lager, and sway, and dance on the table, and cry before you go). If the intimidating energy of these live performances isn’t enough to torpedo you, the gypsy melodies at the heart of these ballooning brass band arrangements will gut you, heart first. Unless, of course, you are willing to live up to the life-or-death demands of the Boban Markovic Orchestra. Handle with care.
