Vibes of normalcy never make for a kick-ass song. That said, gypsies have been making the most eclectic music since violas were hot, and this group of eight’s latest studio endeavor is up there with the best of 2007 because it’s a step toward a new genre—one of the many reasons why Gogol frontman Eugene Hutz graced our October cover. Fueled by the frenetic violin runs of Sergey Rjabtzev and the fresh-squeezed accordion of Yuri Lemeshev, Hutz and company stay true to their Romani gypsy roots while throwing a bit of screw-you-punk into the blender on full speed. As Hutz himself has described it, the music is “pure orgasmo hysteria.” But don’t listen to Super Taranta! just because it’s in this top 10 listen to it because it sounds like Johnny Rotten fronting an Eastern European folk group with thing for reggae.
