Wyclef Jean, the Haiti-born Fugee, solo artist and activist, formed a non-profit organization in 1998 with the aim of raising money for educating young people musically and donating to other worthy causes. This New York concert brought out several top guns to help fill the coffers, among them Stevie Wonder, Eric Clapton, Macy Gray, Mary J. Blige and Destiny’s Child. The latter prove among the highlights of a program equally weighted with dross and fleeting moments of semi-inspiration. Wonder is under-used, Clapton is understated, shrieker Charlotte Church is overwrought and Jean himself okay overall. If you don’t go looking for musical epiphanies, and consider that the proceeds are helping out someone who needs a hand, then this All Star Jam isn’t nearly as lackluster as it seems while you’re watching it.
