Several young women have risen to prominence as the new representatives of Portuguese fado. Mariza, who was born in the former Portuguese colony of Mozambique, seems to have garnered the most international attention, due in no small part to her charismatic performances. Beautifully shot at London’s Union Chapel, this is a perfect representation of Mariza’s riveting concerts. It also captures her understated funky take on the highly dramatic genre. The DVD, which also includes an interview with the performer, is an entertaining introduction to Mariza and the newly resurgent genre of fado.
