Cape Verde’s greatest national treasure is “the barefoot diva” Cesaria Evora, the golden throat synonymous with the island’s fado-like morna style. Evora inspires superlatives for an understated delivery that deftly walks the precarious line between melancholy and sweetness. And, as this part-documentary/part-concert makes known, her life story has also been one of straddling—between tough breaks, lost loves and, ultimately, international adulation. Sandwiched between candid interviews and down-home footage are full-song clips of Evora performing at an outdoor festival in Louisiana and in New York at a session with the omnipresent world music booster Arto Lindsay. Just delicious, this is.
